I have never been to LA, and do not cry about that fact. And I haven't been following the continuing travails of the WGA strike. Stanley Fish gets to the heart of things with a stab at the sad reality that is most of TV today. And somebody, namely writers, are writing the drivel that makes up 90% of TV.
I hope that Mexican farmworkers get more benefits. I do not give a shit about the writers of shows like American Idol. Sorry if that is unprogressive.
I am not sure the issue is as simple as I don't like the product, not to mention the entire Writers Guild is made up of all kinds of writers such as Broadway, Curb, the Office, some of the more brilliant TV out there. Screenwriters to my knowledge are also part of the guild.
The majority is drivel I will give you that, but it is more than the product (are we really pleased with the shit the garment workers produce) that we should care about. It is about the strength of labor, the ability to make a fare wage and the complete democracy of the organization.
Sure, it is true the farm workers and all low-wage workers deserve our support and the working conditions that many here and abroad our subjected to on a daily basis. The WGA does not even come close and is pale in comparison, but that does not mean I do not support their right to strike and be treated fairly.
