“hid (IN) hoboken” at Eureka Market Art Gallery

The hob’art cooperative gallery has announced a new exhibition, “hid (IN) hoboken” opening on June 15th at the new Eureka Market Art Gallery, 259 First Street, Hoboken, which will showcase artwork by many members of the non-profit organization. The Eureka Market is sponsored by Traders of Babylon to encourage the arts and the artists in Hudson County. Liz Cohen, President of hob’art is curating this show.

There will be an opening reception on Friday, June 19th from 6 to 9 p.m. Ndaje, an African Drumming group will perform during the reception. On Monday, June 22nd, at 6 p.m., the Garden State Dance Project, a renowned dance troupe will perform modern interpretive, hip hop, and break dancing. There will be a small entry fee.

During the exhibition, the gallery will be open Monday thru Friday, 9 am to 7pm, on Saturdays, from 9 to 4 pm, and the show can be viewed on Sundays by appointment. The closing date for the exhibit is July 15th.

We found this on Draw and Quarter, an arts blog in Jersey City. It seems murals have taken off in Jersey City. Above is a new mural on Coles by Hudson County Arts Supply. Very nice. We need lots more of this.

hob'arts hoboken: art exhibit at historical museum

The Hoboken Historical Museum will host an exhibition of Hoboken images created by eight members of the hobʼart cooperative gallery from March 3 to April 12, 2009 entitled, “hobʼartʼs Hoboken.” The show was created by Roslyn Rose and juried by Robert Foster, Museum Director. An opening reception will be held on Sunday, March 1 from 2 to 5 pm in the Upper Gallery. On Sunday, March 29, at 4 pm there will be a panel discussion, “Art in a New Era.” Each of the panelists will explain how they have individually used both traditional and modern technology to capture a singular view of our much loved city of Hoboken.

The exhibiting artists include Elizabeth Cohen, who has been inspired to connect a cherished childhood doll with images of Hoboken. Roslyn Rose blends manipulated images of local scenes with old photographs to suggest moments that may have occurred. Andrea Milo photographs locations that are not typical images of the city. Tom Eganʼs pictures of the old piers at night were taken before they were incorporated into community parks. Virginia Parrottʼs recent images of Hoboken are a departure from the strictly documentary. Leona Seufert, not a Hoboken resident, is displaying digital collages of architectural aspects of our transit hub, which she views during her frequent visits. Femi Ford painted the scene from her apartment in the North East part of the city as a gift to a man who wanted to see Hoboken again before he died. Sissi Siska creates unique paintings on silk, including a view of the community that honors our memories of 9/11/01.

INSTANT GRATIFICATION: I'm interested in superficial and product-oriented interference in the natural phases of life, as it pertains to childhood encounters with religion and sex. As a girl raised Catholic, I became accustomed to attractive versions of unattractive ideas in vessels that appealed to me at a young age. Storytelling formulas and strategies are used by parents to make certain complexities, such as Catholicism and sex, appear more final and less questionable. At 23, I'm beginning to dissect those issues that were once deemed absolute. My paintings are adult responses to the formulas I was fed as a child; they're about realizing that the notion of the unobtainable being attainable is indeed false. My body of work challenges the Catholic church's myth of accessibility by acknowledging the impossibility of mimicking an ideal Catholic figure, and by exploring a more personal and organic mode of power and sensuality: sex and the female form.


Celeste Rapone was raised in Wayne, NJ and attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where she received her B.F.A. degree in 2007. Ms. Rapone is the winner of the 2008 Phoenix Gallery Fellowship Program at the Phoenix Gallery.

fall is here! time for the annual jersey city artists tour ... my personal favorite stop will be found object art at van vorst park to see the interaction of art and nature in deborah pohl's traffic cone #3: for the birds, see photo above.

note that for both days of the studio tour, the jersey city museum (gallery hours 12pm-5pm saturday and 12pm-8pm sunday) will offer free admission to all visitors.

fall is also the time to break out last year's gear (like i always do) or buy something new ... at rubee's closet ... run there this weekend for 15% off all sweaters and jackets!

Where is Your Favorite Blog?

I don't read much of Vanity Fair. But I saw something in my favorite Brazilian newspaper, which I read almost every day, Folha de S. Paulo. They have something they call their Blogopticon. And it has a cool idea: you can click on any one of the blogs, which are listed in a compass setup, and find out what they are all about. As well as see what VF's writers think of them as far as whether they are earnest or scurrilous, news or just opinion.

Just in case you wanted to know, unfortunately, SG, is not listed. Yet.

i just picked up my framed gimme gimme gimme from local art dealer and framer pablo godoy at right angle framing. it's glorious, praise jesus! pablo picked a gothic-inspired frame to evoke the feeling of the inside of a cathedral, it perfectly complements the tone and feel of celeste's painting. once the art is on my wall, (my apartment is too small for the largess of the piece), i will post a snapshot... thanks pablo! and thanks celeste! as i start to explore more art, i thought about one of my longtime favorites -- the german photographer loretta lux and her series of wacky, other worldly children. take a peek at her other surreal children...

lil' miss

i stumbled upon the work of local new jersey artist celeste rapone (a RISD graduate) and was drawn to her series on religion... her oil on canvas paintings of jesus and co., with jesus surrounded by patterns of colorful peeps and chocolate bunny candies or lil' miss, a beauty pageant-inspired youthful virgin mary with baby doll jesus resonate with my twisted views on catholicism. after an email correspondence with the artist, i'm learning more about her work and influences... i just bought a fabulous print of gimme gimme gimme that i can't wait to frame and hang on my wall (this painting evokes for me that odd rite of passage i suffered through in childhood -- CCD and indoctrination).

Catholicism Series:
Growing up Catholic in northern New Jersey meant taking my religion very seriously (or at least making sure it appeared that way on the surface). As a young child in North Jersey, however, a vital part of being Catholic meant letting everyone else know you were Catholic. This was obviously not done by practicing or abiding by the rules of Catholicism, but in religiously inspired personal decor and embracing the accessibility of going to church or confession once a year around the holidays. This plastic idea of fulfilling one’s Catholic duties as a young boy or girl by materially exhibiting the icons of the religion led to the most superficial and misunderstood displays of Catholicism I have ever encountered. This series, based on my experiences growing up in this environment, is meant to capture the exploitation and convenience of calling oneself “Catholic” in a modern-day society.

BARISTA BOY MAKES RUSSIAN HEADLINE

ok, i can't translate this for our SG readers, but i wanted to share barista boy's international fame. barista boy created a series of photographs entitled it's only a game using a chess board and chess pieces. each photo illustrates a theme with a clever layout to evoke the idea. then he published a glossy book of all the installation photos. stop by emack and bolio's aka mola to see him, get a drink special and peruse the book.

i hope barista boy will explain to our readers what the review says and how he was discovered!! check out more of his creative installations here and at his "lame space."

NEW--the other side of the hudson

if you live on the other side of the river in 'boken or jersey city, maybe you've seen NEW, a sorta magazine/guide to hudson county filled with arts news, local issues, shopping, eats, etc. the editions are free, helpful, and visually pleasing, get your copy here.

as described on their site, "NEW is published twice per year in the spring and the fall. The guide is integrated with the website and together they act as a definitive resource for contemporary living in New Jersey. We focus only on positive change and growth and always encourage creative and honest problem solving."

recently on their blog, NEW posted about maxwell's, the music venue that brings much needed hipness and clout to our mile square city. recently spotted at maxwell's? i read on nj.com's blog that catherine keener visited our town to hear rain phoenix's band, the papercranes...

Hoboken History: Maxwell's Style:

The Hoboken Historical Museum hosts an unusual-for-a-historical-museum program focused on one of Hudson County's treasures: Maxwell's. Former owner/booker Steve Fallon and current co-owner/booker Todd Abramson "will talk about what has made Maxwell's one of the coolest area clubs since long before Brooklyn was hip." Here's hoping they delve into the idea of a rock club as catalyst for urban renewal and arts-scene building.

THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE

local hoboken artist femi ford has a new exhibit, the elegant universe... check out the reception on dec. 1 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Gala Pilates Studio, 262 first street in the mile square city. a few weeks ago, i met with the artist in her studio and saw a sneak peek of studies of these fantastic tableaux. she also explained the process of etching and how she developed this project.

a recent article in the waterfront journal and on nj.com highlights her work and influence for this show:

Using mixed media, I explore how time, space, and energy are related and as a result some work rests calm and serene while others are tumultuous and aggressive. I am inspired by "String Theory"; many physicists now believe that strings -- minuscule multidimensional vibrating strands of energy thought to make up all matter -- hold the key to uniting the world of the very large and the very small in a single theory sought by Einstein and countless others.
While incorporating these ideas and theories, my paintings & etchings have leaned towards abstract expressions. My strong affinity with physics and water leads me to create works that are fluid and organic. The creative process is my passion and serves as an outlet for my emotions. I enjoy the feeling of freedom & solitude when creating art and enjoy getting lost in my work.

Helen Cantrell: Jersey City Painter

In October I had a chance to walk around the Jersey City Artist Studio Tour and came across Helen Cantrell's work. To the left is one of her oil paintings titled, "Jersey City Snow". I love the painterly quality and "Bridgeport Yellow Sky" is one of my favorites.

Helen was born in Chicago, Illinois, March 1947 and has lived on East Coast for past 30 years. Besides printmaking and painting, she enjoys gardening, her two cats, and is a huge “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” fan. She admires “abstract expressionist” painters like Willem de Kooning and more “realist” modern art like Richard Diebenkorn.

hoboken art: wallpaper contest

Did you hear that the Hoboken based, handprint wallpaper company Studio Printworks has recently announced a design call for a contest named, "Unrolled Art." Your wallpaper design must be Hoboken themed and can involve anything related to the local scene.

The design selected will be featured as Hoboken's very own wallpaper, displayed in local institutions and included in the Fall '08 collection! Submissions are due December 5, 2007 so get going! Contest details here>>

october art events in the garden state

there are wonderful smaller museums, galleries and artist studios to visit in the garden state. bypass the crowds of manhattan, spend no $$$, and catch some art on the other side of the hudson!

passaic county community college houses a super collection at its broadway and LRC galleries and in the historic hamilton club, including photographer george tice, ben shahn (see his mlk, jr lithograph from 1968) and paterson sculptor Gaetano Federici.

take a walking tour of historic paterson on 10/27 to learn about Fred Wesley Wentworth (p-town's leading architect from 1890 to 1944), which includes visiting over a dozen buildings downtown such as the paterson ymca where i work and the courthouse where i served as a judge's "chambermaid."
